On 12-29-06, Williamsburg County Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire on Manning Hwy (Hwy 261) west of Kingstree. Upon arrival of first unit, found a single family cinder block dwelling with heavy fire coming from one bedroom and smoke throughout the rest.

Units made aggressive attack with 2 1 3/4" hand lines and extinguished the fire within minutes. Family had made units aware that a male family member who was handicapped was still inside the residence. Interior units were radioed and soon after found the deceased victim.

The fire is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
